Episode 23 - Mental Health First Aid

For many years the club has had an excellent physical health program. First team doctor Roy Carey literally wrote the book on sports medicine in Victorian Hockey, Dr Malcom Clark has generously supported the club with first aid supplies and training; and a host of physiotherapist and specialist coaches support the playing group.

Last year however, following the tragedy of one of our junior players taking their own life, we realised our mental health support could be improved. Through the counsel of Dr Michael Carr Greg the club embarked on a groundbreaking program to equip a large cross section of our members with the knowledge and skills to offer first aid for mental health problems.

This week Tom Winter presents Liz Grant, Kerri Hendry and Julia Patterson; three of the more than twenty members who have completed the Mental Health First aid training course. You'll hear how the Mental Health Working Group came about, it's objectives and reflections of the training from perspective of our three guests.
