Episode Notes
Malachi Toney caught a touchdown pass and threw another, Carson Beck tossed 3 TD’s of his own, and the 12th-ranked Miami Hurricanes dominated the #22-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers 38-7 on the road in their final statement to college football’s playoff committee for a sport in the 12-team field that will be announced next Saturday, December 7th.
Toney put up 165 total yards and the 2 scores- both in the 2nd quarter. The super-frosh hit Elijah Lofton with a perfect 9-yard throw then hauled in a pass from Beck from 22 yards out later in the quarter.
He led the Hurricanes’ receivers with 13 catches for 126 yards and added 30 rushing yards on 5 carries.
Beck went 23-29 for 267 yards, the 3 TD’s and an interception. The senior QB also hit Marty Brown with a 3rd quarter touchdown pass and CJ Daniels with another in the 4th.
After Pitt sacked Beck for a 15-yard loss to end Miami’s opening drive, the ‘Canes scored on their next 5 possessions- including 4-straight touchdowns- besides the one play they ran at end of the 1st half.
Girard Pringle Jr. led Miami’s rushing attack with 82 yards on 10 carries. Mark Fletcher Jr. added 30 yards on 10 carries including a 4-yard scoring run.
The Miami defense was stellar again- holding Pittsburgh to just 30 rushing yards (1.4 per attempt) while totaling 4 sacks and 6 tackles for a loss.
Now that they’ve done all that they can do on the field, the Hurricanes will have to sit and wait for the rest of the games to be played- including a couple that could deeply impact their playoff chances- and for the playoff committee to select the final 12 teams that will play for the national championship.
The win over Pitt gives Miami its 2nd straight 10-win season and a strong case of making the playoff over Notre Dame (ranked 9th) because of the Hurricanes’ head-to-head win over the Irish on August 31st at Hard Rock Stadium and their margins of victory against common opponents, including today’s.
