1:42.50! Josh Hoey Leaves Us Speechless After Breaking Wilson Kipketer’s Legendary 800m Record

Josh Hoey smashed Wilson Kipketer’s iconic 800m world indoor record at the 2026 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix by running 1:42.50. Kipketer’s 1:42.67 record had stood since 1997 Paced through 500m by his brother Jaxson Hoey, he stayed controlled, then closed hard over the final 200m. Result: WR + American record, his second indoor world record after the 600m in December. Since 2024, Hoey has gone from a 1:47 athlete to the fastest indoor 800m runner ever.
