The Pistons took a risk and changed the NBA forever
The 2004 Pistons were in a pickle: They wanted to win in 2004, but they didn't want to hurt their chances of winning past 2004. GM Joe Dumars had a lot of options available to adjust the team midseason, but he had to find one that would please his impatient coach, Larry Brown, *and* preserve cap space to keep the team afloat in the years to come. In the end, he went all in on the now. He went for Rasheed Wallace. It paid off, but not without some long-term effects. James Harden and Daryl Morey went from besties to beef
Rarely do you see a friendship between an NBA executive and a superstar as genuine as the one between Daryl Morey and James Harden. Morey wore t-shirts with Harden's face on them, Harden bought into to Morey's math theories about basketball. Together they set records and changed the game as we know it and if you're a fan of long-twos you're angry but that's the way basketball is now, sorry Dad. Together on the Houston Rockets and then again on the 76ers, the dynamic-duo didn't manage to win any rings...or make any finals appearances... and what do you know that beautiful, unique, game-changing friendship deteriorated into, you guessed it, beef. Shall we eat? Snowboarding's beef with Shaun White
For all sports fans who don't follow snowboarding, this will be the strangest beef ever. Real quick, if you want more from Secret Base, such as Jon's series The History of Charging the Mound, check us out on https://www.patreon.com/secretbase As for this beef, it hinges on the approach to snowboarding competition that focuses more on fun than we're used to. It's a beautiful thing, but one that's hard to maintain with tons of money on the line. Shaun White brought a different approach, a mindset that made sense in other sports, but one that drew the ire of his competitors. But he couldn't stop winning, he couldn't stop drawing attention, and with all that attention being more for him than the sport, some disagreements proved unavoidable. Steve Kerr bailed on the Knicks to coach the Warriors. Good move, Steve
NBA history would look so different if Steve Kerr made a different choice -- the choice everyone expected him to make -- back in 2014. Sean Payton's Super Bowl 44 halftime decision was a big deal
When the New Orleans Saints faced the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl 44, they were at a crossroads at halftime. Searching for a spark after a frustrating first 30 minutes of action, Saints coach Sean Payton felt compelled to do something that was unprecedentedly bold, gutsy, and a very, very big deal. Before John Elway reached legendary status, he was a known loser
John Elway is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history. With a resume that nearly any pro QB would die for, it’s no surprise he’s forever enshrined in the Hall of Fame and remembered as one of the game's greats. There’s really no argument against that. However, there was a time when that type of success didnt appear likely. An unforeseen period where he nearly forced his way out of football altogether. An extremely talented player, sure, but someone who would never win a championship. Let’s meet those versions of John Elway in the Prism. Who had the hottest run to the Super Bowl?
Throughout the 59 years spanning 1966-2024, the NFL produced 118 conference champions. As they entered the Super Bowl, they were all on a winning streak and playing at a high level to have won their conference, but there still exists a vast range of precisely how good. Focusing specifically on the latter stages of a season, who were the biggest juggernauts we've ever seen entering Super Sunday? And when that day rolled around, how exactly did that recent dominance manifest itself? Corrections: • at 11:25, the Cardinals still resided in St. Louis at this point in time • at 13:45, that pie chart's split should be 41:18/22:40 Subscribe: https://goo.gl/Nbabae Check out our full video catalog: https://goo.gl/9pMHRV Visit our playlists: https://goo.gl/NvpZFF Like SB Nation on Facebook: https://goo.gl/Pzcs7O Follow on Twitter: https://goo.gl/5LI02D Follow on Instagram: https://goo.gl/aY2FFK Explore SB Nation: http://www.sbnation.com

Cam Newton: not a QB, D1 flameout… Heisman
The overall consensus is that Cam Newton was a damn good football player. You can have opinions on his somewhat rollercoaster NFL career, but you kinda have to be a beast to be one of the few people who have won both a Heisman trophy and an NFL MVP award. Let's forget those achievements for a second, though, to focus on Cam Newton's early rise. Because there was a time when none of that success looked remotely possible. A period where people didn’t even regard him as a quarterback. A waste of talent who found himself at the bottom ranks of football. Let’s meet those versions of Cam Newton in the Prism.
