It all started in 1992 at the Olympic Games in Albertville, where the 19-year-old made his Olympic debut. Between 1972 and 2018, the Japanese skijumper took part in eight Olympic Games. He won his first Olympic medal in 1994 when he secured silver in the team large hill competition. Twenty years later, he won his first individual Olympic medal in Sochi, as well as a bronze medal in the team large hill competition. This made him the oldest ski jumper to ever win a medal at the Winter Olympics, at the age of 41 years and 254 days.
